Media Matters

20 Feb

Taking a little detour off of gum, this blog is going to be about the Media Matters Conference which i attended Feb. 11 2011. There was a lot of interesting things that where talked about at the  Media Matters Conference but the topic that stood out the most and made me really think was ethical choices people make. Is it okay to recreate a situation and not tell the audience it was recreated and show it as if it was in real time? Is it okay to show something in a certain way to get a reaction out of people and make money?

I see this all the time going on in advertisement and commercials. To bring it back to gum slightly I get really irritated with Wrigley’s 5 Gum. It advertises itself by suggesting it stimulates the five human senses. It uses the slogan “Stimulate Your Senses.” Yet when you actually chew it, it doesn’t do anything to your senses its just a normal peice of gum and your paying for the pretty wrapping.

Its a mind boggling situation because yes you have to sell something in order to make money but is there a way to do so honestly; and if so how does the consumer know what the truth is and if it honest.
